Hello, I am Professor Suwon Park, the head of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering.

Thank you for visiting the home page of our department. The information included in this website is for the high school students who may be the future students of our department, as well as the enrolled students and graduates of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering.

The communication technology has been developing from the speech-oriented communication in the past to the multimedia communication technology including speech, image and data in the present time. The Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering has maintained a two-track operation, which consists of the "communication system-based technology" and "communication network technology" that are needed for the multimedia communications. In the communication system-based technology track, the subjects include the speech and image signal processing, digital communication, semiconductor engineering, IT-SoC, and the optical communications, while the subjects focused on the communication network technology track are composed of the computer system, network theory, computer network, and the Internet engineering.

The history of our department is almost equivalent to the history of Kwangwoon University. In a certain sense, it may be regarded as the history of communication engineering in this country. The origin of our department may date back to the year 1963 when the Department of Communications Engineering was established in the Dongguk Electronic Engineering College, which was the predecessor of Kwangwoon University. After merging the Department of Communication Engineering with the Department of Wireless Communication in 1978, our department has been developed under the current name. In 1995, our department was integrated with the Department of Electronic Engineering and Electric Wave Engineering to be operated as the School of Electronic Engineering, and the system had maintained for a while. However, preparing for the Engineering Accreditation System from 2002, the school system reverted to the previous state, so that the independent operation of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering has been restored.

Currently, our department consists of 13 professors, some 50 students in master & doctoral course, and about 500 undergraduate students. And now we produce a total of 130 graduates of doctors, masters and bachelors every year. Most of our graduates are playing a pivotal role in important institutions such as electronic communication-related businesses and research centers. And the number of graduates who go on to graduate schools, or go study abroad, or get a job in foreign companies has been increasing. The Kwangwoon University has maintained the old tradition of IT-specialized University, so that the number of our graduates who have become executives in leading conglomerates in Korea could have been increased. And because of the revitalization of graduate school education and studies, the awarded orders from the government and government-sponsored research centers, and the orders related to industrial-academic projects from private sectors are on the rise every year, so that our department can provide the graduate school with the top-level educational environment in the country. The 560 members of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering are working day and night to contribute to the human civilization, as well as the development of domestic communication industry, by inheriting and developing the IT-specialized tradition of Kwangwoon University. And also, we will do our best to raise our department to the global standards.

Suwon Park,
Head of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering
